The Nazis developed an elaborate system of brutal measures to suppress and intimidate all their idealogical or political opponents. Terror has been developed as a  method of government. Under the cover of war, the full threat of this campaign was unleashed.

Jews were the prime focus of the destructive machinery and were the group that was singled out for total annihilation. In all though, some eleven million people died at the hands of the Nazis in one way or another. Political opponents were detained in concentration camps, physically and mentally handicapped were murdered in the euthanasia programme. Clergy and Jehovah's Witnesses were interned for refusing to accept the authority of Hitler, and homosexuals were sent to concentration camps. Millions of Poles and Soviet prisoners of war died from cruelty.
